CLASSIFICATION OF BREEDERS
By Donald O. Yewande
I heard a breeder of sort claim "you don't call yourself a
breeder until you have four generations in your house/
kennel". This led me into this research work. Take your
time to study this piece in order to know where you are
and what you need to become.
There is a lot of confusion about Breeders. In essence
anybody that has a litter of puppies whether mixed or
purebred is essentially a breeder, but that does not
mean such is a qualified or a responsible breeder.
The purpose of this article is to enlighten the breeding
public on the individual's present status, to take
adequate notice of what is missing, and set our minds
on improvements in order to someday be regarded as a
responsible breeder.
(1) ACCIDENTAL BREEDERS
This befalls a person who has an un-spayed female that
suddenly got pregnant. This can be by accident of the
person also has a male dog, or this unplanned
pregnancy could also be a compliment of a stray dog in
the neighbourhood. This puppies will necessarily not be
of same breed. Usually puppies from this litter will be
cheap or free, unregistered, most times unvaccinated or
dewormed, not necessarily raised in an ideal
environments. Usually mostly of these puppies are taken
away from their mother before 8 weeks.
(2) BACKYARD BREEDERS
Most accidental breeders graduates into backyard
breeders having enjoyed the financial profit of selling
puppies. With a little more knowledge, this group of
breeders decides not to breed mixed breed again but
rather buy purebred dogs. They buy a pure breed bitch if
they don't have any before and a pure breed male from
anywhere. They might get registered or unregistered dog
from different sources. They breed this pair together
over and over without any monitoring or consciousness
and repeating same faults and health issue throughout
many generations. Also this type of puppies are way
cheaper than that of professional breeders. They crash
the price at will and tend to frustrate professional
breeders. This categories of breeders are regarded as
"PUPPY FARMERS".
(3) EXPERIMENTAL BREEDERS.
These categories of breeders purchase pure breed dogs
of both sexes hoping to have litters out of them
someday. The dogs are carefully selected, but the
selection is based on the Phenotype and not the
Genotype. The inspiration here is necessarily not to
make money but, to sometimes to teach young children
the miracle of life, or to go through the experience of
raising a litter (let's face it, it is rather a memorable
experience) I remember the first litter we ever had and
its positive effects on my little children. They woke up
each morning to cuddle this little puppies and sleeps
with them all night. They wept at the exit of each puppy
to their new homes (what a brilliant experience). I still
have some of those pictures with tears in their eyes
while cuddling their fur babies.
At least with this group of breeder, you can be fairly
certain that a lot of love and care went into the
planning and raising of said litter. Depending from
where the parent is purchased, some background
information might also be available, but probably from
only one generation back.
(4)PROFESSIONAL/ REPUTABLE BREEDER
This group of breeders came into existence MOSTLY
from 'experimental starts' and then got a love for doing
it. Sometimes these are second generation breeders
learning from their parents or close friends.
By professional I don't mean a living is made out of the
trade rather, it is a fine art with knowledge of YEARS of
experience thus making such 'professional' in the art of
genetics, constantly producing sound dogs, and good
people skills with a very high reputation. These are
people with a deep love for breeding. They won't sell
their bitch over pseudopregnancy or whenever they are
financially broke.
Also each of the dogs in heir home/kennel was
painstakingly picked from OWN BRED LITTERS, BOUGHT
IN FROM OTHER REPUTABLE breeder or IMPORTED
from specific bloodlines. The pedigrees would have
been scrutinized, health issues properly researched and
also the genetics. Each dog is very well known, not only
in body and mind but also heritage and temperament.
Mostly line-breeding and inbreeding, even back breeding
are done to set the lines well (And if they don't
understand these terms they are not professionals)
With these few researches of mine which is subject to
reproof and further research, each breeder must identify
where they are right now and seek adequate mentoring
from those ahead of them with humility while those
with deep knowledge of he trade should be
magnanimous enough to uplift those at the lower level
because the nonprofessional breeders can make the
market bad with unrealistic price slashes and
misinforming puppy buyers.
